Live Presentations

Presentations at local area churches are the core activity of the Black Faith-based Health Initiative.  Given the historical significance of churches and pastors in the African American community, local congregations are the best and most trusted avenue of reaching African American people where they live, work and worship.  On this particular evening, keynote speaker and activist Michelle Lopez speaks to a racially diverse audience at New Hope Baptist Church pastored by Rev. Roy Jones, Jr.  Michelle Lopez is widely sought as a speaker and workshop facilitator.  She is also HIV positive.

HIV Testing & Referral

The Black Faith-based Health Initiative coordinates with the City of Austin, local public health departments and community based organizations (CBOs) to provide HIV testing, results and referrals when necessary.  All services are strictly confidential and the well being of the citizen being served is always the highest priority.  The mobile testing van is deployed at many BFHI-sponsored activities including the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS, community health fairs and other widely attended festivities and events throughout Austin and Travis County.

Community Health Fairs

The Black Faith-based Health Initiative organizes and hosts events throughout the year to give local agencies and other non-profit organizations the opportunity to increase informational awareness, promote wellness and disease prevention.  This community fair was hosted during the April 2007 Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS festivities at Wesley United Methodist Church of Austin pastored by Rev. Sylvester Chase.

Education Centers

Education Centers present valuable information on health disparity issues that may not be readily accessible to members of the black faith community.  These stations of knowledge are located in partner churches, community centers and other high-profile areas of traffic and present culturally appropriate information on health disparity issues facing the African American community.
